Authority by operation

Intrastate Carrier Authority Requirements

Intrastate does not mean unregulated. State authority, USDOT registration, insurance, tax, and permit rules vary by operation.

Does this operation need authority?

Federal MC authority may not apply to purely intrastate commerce, but a USDOT number or state number may still be required. Freight can retain an interstate character without the truck crossing a border.

The answer turns on compensation, cargo, commerce, route, and vehicle ratings. The equipment name by itself is never the full test.

Launch checklist

  • Analyze the freight’s full movement
  • Check state operating authority
  • Check state USDOT adoption
  • Confirm state insurance filing
  • Review local permits and taxes
