Authority by operation

Hotshot Trucking Authority Requirements

Hotshot carriers often cross several regulatory thresholds as soon as a pickup and trailer combination exceeds 10,001 pounds.

Does this operation need authority?

For-hire interstate hotshot operations generally need a USDOT number, MC authority, BOC-3, UCR, and accepted insurance filing.

The answer turns on compensation, cargo, commerce, route, and vehicle ratings. The equipment name by itself is never the full test.

Launch checklist

  • Add truck and trailer GVWR
  • Choose commodity and operating radius
  • Confirm CDL threshold
  • Set up drug consortium if CDL applies
  • Register apportioned plate and IFTA when thresholds apply

Insurance and equipment decisions

Insurance

Price the pickup and trailer as a commercial combination. Disclose trailer type, commodities, radius, and whether vehicles are hauled.

Equipment

Use the combined GVWR—not current load weight—to assess CDL and safety thresholds.
